WHAT IS CRAB ISLAND?
Crab Island isn’t actually an island. It’s a large underwater sandbar in Choctawhatchee Bay near Destin, Florida, where shallow water creates one of the area’s most popular places to spend a day on the water.
On a typical day, boats anchor around the sandbar while guests swim, float, paddleboard and relax in the water. Depending on the tide, weather and recent rainfall, the water can range from clear emerald green to deeper shades of blue and green.
Unlike a beach, there is no shoreline to walk onto. Crab Island is only accessible by water, which is why most visitors arrive by boat, charter or rental.

THE EXPERIENCE
WHAT IS A DAY AT CRAB ISLAND LIKE?
There really isn’t a single itinerary for Crab Island; and that’s part of the appeal. Most days begin with a cruise across Choctawhatchee Bay before your captain finds a place to anchor in the shallow water.
From there, the day slows down. Swim, float beside the boat, listen to music, paddleboard, have lunch or simply settle into the water with your group. Some guests spend nearly their entire charter at Crab Island, while others prefer to explore more of the bay.

FOOD & DRINKS
ARE THERE FOOD VENDORS AT CRAB ISLAND?
Yes, but vendor availability is seasonal and can change from day to day. Summer typically brings more floating food and drink vendors, while spring and fall can be much less predictable.
We recommend bringing food, drinks and plenty of water rather than relying on vendors. You’re also welcome to arrange catering for your charter in advance.
Local tip: Once you’ve selected your captain, ask them what they’ve been seeing at Crab Island. Our captains are on the water regularly and can often give you the most current picture of vendor activity.
WHEN TO VISIT
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT CRAB ISLAND?
Crab Island can look very different depending on the time of day, tide and weather.
For the clearest water, conditions are often best around high tide, when Gulf water moves through Destin Pass and into the bay. Sunny days can make the shallow water look especially bright and turquoise.
Spring and summer bring the liveliest atmosphere, while weekdays and mornings can offer a more relaxed experience with fewer boats on the water.

Crab Island is less about an itinerary and more about spending the day in the water.
Boats anchor in the shallow water while guests swim, float, paddleboard, listen to music and relax with family and friends. Some groups come for the lively social atmosphere, while others find a quieter spot and simply enjoy the water.
There’s no need to rush. Once you’re anchored, the day is really about settling in and enjoying being on the water together.
HOW DEEP IS THE WATER?
Water depth varies with the tide and where your boat anchors. Some areas may be shallow enough to stand, while others can be considerably deeper. Never assume the water is shallow before getting in.

IS CRAB ISLAND FAMILY-FRIENDLY?
Absolutely. Families are a big part of the Crab Island experience, and kids often love spending the day swimming, floating and playing in the water.
The atmosphere can change depending on the day and where you anchor. Weekdays and mornings are generally more relaxed, while busy summer weekends can be livelier. Your captain can help find an area that better matches the kind of day your family is looking for.
Children should always be closely supervised around the water, and appropriate life jackets should be used based on age, swimming ability and applicable boating requirements.
GETTING THERE
HOW DO YOU GET TO CRAB ISLAND?
Crab Island is located in Choctawhatchee Bay near Destin, just north of the Destin Bridge. Because it’s a submerged sandbar with no road or pedestrian access, the only way to visit Crab Island is by boat.
Visitors typically arrive on their own boat, rent a boat for the day or book a private charter with a captain. For first-time visitors, a charter can make the day considerably easier—you don’t have to navigate unfamiliar waters, find the right place to anchor or worry about operating the boat.
If you’re staying along 30A, your departure point matters too. You don’t necessarily need to drive all the way into Destin to begin your day on the water.

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT SAFETY
AT CRAB ISLAND?
Crab Island is a boating destination, so conditions can change throughout the day with the weather, wind, tides and boat traffic.
Always check the water depth before getting in, keep children closely supervised and follow your captain’s instructions while aboard and around the boat. Boat traffic can be heavy during busy summer days, so staying aware of your surroundings is important.
If conditions aren’t suitable for Crab Island, your captain can help determine the safest options for your day on the water.

WEATHER ON THE WATER
WHAT IF THE WEATHER CHANGES?
Florida weather can change quickly, especially during the summer. A forecast showing a chance of rain doesn’t necessarily mean your entire day on the water will be rainy.
Captains monitor local conditions, including storms, wind and water conditions, and safety always comes first. If conditions change while you’re on the water, your captain can adjust the day as needed.
For Crab Island Luxury Adventures guests, if weather or water conditions are determined to be unsafe for your charter, you’ll have the option to reschedule or receive a full refund.
DON’T LET A RAIN ICON RUIN YOUR VACATION PLANS
Summer forecasts along the Emerald Coast frequently include a chance of scattered showers or thunderstorms. Conditions can vary considerably throughout the day, so it’s better to watch the actual conditions than assume a rainy forecast means a washout.
